Organ Donation Week 2021
15 September 2021In support of Organ Donation week this year, Live Life Give Life and the Orgamites are taking the power of colouring to 18 children’s hospitals. There are 192 children in the UK waiting for an organ transplant, of which 42 need a heart.
The 2021 Organ Donation Week is happening from the 20th to the 26th of September. It is a campaign run by NHS Blood & Transplant with the aim of raising awareness around organ donation. The theme this year is ‘leave them certain’ and is focused on getting families to have the conversation (about organ donation).
Many organ donations are prevented by families because they don’t know what their loved one would have wanted. The research indicates that 9 in 10 families would allow donation to go ahead if they knew that is what their loved one wanted.
The campaign hopes to connect with the public through 3 key approaches:
- Stories and statistics of children and young people in organ donation
- Bringing attention to the new NHSBT school materials
- Encouraging conversations across the generations
There will be several activities such as a Heart Walk, where people can raise awareness for organ donation by doing a walk. And Light Up Pink where organisations can illuminate their building or place of interest in pink to raise awareness.
Each year Live Life Give Life supports Organ Donation Week with a campaign of our own. This year, to tie in with the focus on children and young people, we have enlisted the help of our friends, the mighty Orgamites.
The Orgamites are lovable organ characters and are the perfect way to get a conversation about organ donation started. They are aimed at kids aged 6 – 11 and listed as an official partner of NHSBT.
The NHSBT school materials are aimed at secondary schools, while the Orgamites school toolkit is designed for younger children.

We will be providing Orgamites colouring sheets to the hospitals along with Orgamites collateral for the kids as prizes and gifts. Parents or hospital staff can share the coloured in sheets on social media for the public to appreciate and enjoy the kid’s efforts.
If you would like to get involved, you can download the colouring sheets here and share the end results on social media using the following hashtags:
