Born with Alports Syndrome, I encountered renal failure suddenly in October 2011 and started dialysis almost straight away. I was lucky enough to join the transplant programme through Sheffield Northern General hospital and within weeks I was in good health – except for my kidneys! I was fortunate enough to have family willing to be tested for a living donor transplant and four were suitable matches.
My cousin, Stuart Ashcroft, was picked from the list of potential donors. He spent the following 12 months undergoing tests and losing over 25 kilos in order to be fit for surgery. On 18th February 2013 I received my gift from Stuart and have not looked back. His desire to donate inspired me to contact LLGL and I now find myself involved with great opportunities to help and support others.
